2011: Memorable moments in music
- Tyler's Yonkers video and the Jimmy Fallon performance. The video was and remains a masterpiece, while the Fallon show seemed to herald a serious insurrection on the mainstream, as the inmates took over the asylum. Ultimately the quality of the music never quite lived up to the hope, but at this moment it seemed genuinely thrilling.
- Sufjan gigs in May. The Royal Festival Hall showcased an utterly spellbinding performance spectacle, in which Sufjan and band absolutely killed it. Possibly the most unifying thing on these boards all year?
- Lou Reed & Metallica announce their intention to troll the world. Succeed beyond all measure (http://tinyurl.com/bnbo2x9)
- John Maus says that record stores ain't all that, and the internet has a massive cry, include a bunch of virgins on here.
- PIAS warehouse fire ruins a bunch of label stock - a massively genuine fucker for those without insurance.
- Record Store Day's arguably noble intentions foiled by the event just becoming a bullshit consumerist lottery for green vinyl. Still, suckers born every minute...
- ATP shafts the Mangum event, in their most blatant act of disregard yet in an increasingly cavalier attitude towards the people buying the tickets. Last weekend's event seen as one of the best, showing the concept remains rock solid.
More minuses than I intended there, I'll think of more plusses as the day warms up.
Anyway, what other great moments came about this year?
