Songs About Nothing
by Jason Lescalleet, but you knew that.
I meant to give this a listen earlier in the year, but I've only just got round to it today, spurred on by EOY stuff.
it's pretty beguiling thus far: I love it when noise music has a gnarled sense of musicality and atmosphere, and this hits the sweet spot for me.
(tbh, it's more of a drone/ambient affair.)
it's really dynamic, it has lots of variation in texture (both kinds) and there is an extremely dilapidated sense of rhythm and melody - by which I mean it is what mounds of rubble with maybe a scattering of free-standing structural remnants are to an actual building.
it has an open-ended, vague kind of narrative. it feels like a succession of photographs or video clips of different locations, each with a very slight, damaged emotional charge.
very few records this year have really caught my imagination, so I'm pretty stoked about this one.
and I've only just finished the first disc. haha. I'll let you know what I think about the second in due time.
