Bat Makumba #4 with Hieroglyphic Being, TAAE, Sheffield [JAG]
It's that time again...
So firstly thanks a bunch to all who made the last Bat Makumba surpass all expectations - what a cracking night that was - so we thought we'd treat you to something a bit special for the next.
Chicago's Jamal Moss has been cultivating all sorts of weird and wonderful sounds which we've been hooked on for years - a wildly prolific and inspired back catalogue that owes as much to the afro-futurist teachings of Sun Ra as it does to the primal productions of Chicago's founding fathers Ron Hardy and Larry Heard.
A self-professed 'experimental composer and interplanetary sound artist', Moss' work hacks away at the clinks and chirps of drum machines we're all so used to and folds them into a wacky and thrilling cosmic vortex that is utterly transcendental. Under his Hieroglyphic Being moniker he has forged vibrations which are as impossible to decipher as the nominal characters his name references. Often associated with rawness - he chooses to reflect in his music the truth of life that the over quantised, auto-tuned and shiny realms of dance music choose to ignore. A true visionary - no hyperbole intended.
His DJ sets are a sight to behold - rapid pitch changes, stylistic segues which could only be pulled off with the sort of bravado that a character like Moss possesses, along with endlessly inventive tempo overlaps, that will leave you questioning whether the danceflooor was in fact subject to a visit from an extraterrestrial.
He's also renowned for his label Mathematics Recordings which offers unique artists a platform to release their music, whilst giving them the revenues which most labels keep to themselves - so as well as a mad innovator he's a really great guy. Consider the likes of John Heckle, Simoncino, and Marcello Napoletano, who you probably wouldn't have heard of if it wasn't for him.
As you can tell, we're mega excited about this.
Capacity is extremely limited so get down early to avoid disappointment.
All tickets will be OTD. £5 donation sistas.
It's BYOB again and there'll be the delightful lights/visuals/atmospheres.
