Do you ever struggle to get into the previous work of a band who were brought to your attention well into their career?
Like contextually you just don't get their early stuff or whatever?
Case in point for me is Mercury Rev. My older brother was well into them when I was a kid, Boces and all that. My starting point was Goddess on a Hiway. I think the first album I bouht by them was All Is Dream shortly after I'd heard 'Nite and Fog' played a few times on Lamacq.
Anyways, I can listen to eaerly Mercury Rev but it just doesn't seem to be the same band at all. I mean it's good, I really dig it, but it doesn't carry that same sort of depth and weight that most of their output from Deserters Songs onwards does.
Got me to thinking that this is probably the case for a lot of people - say someone who got into Biffy Clyro or Snow Patrol after they went massive - they'd probably struggle with the earlier stuff, wouldn't they?
I think what I'm saying is context is kind of important in terms of how you perceive an artist, isn't it?
