What's the best (cheap) way of recording a live gig?
It doen't need to be Abbey Road standard, but preferably good enough quality to be able to release it.
I want to capture both the clean sound direct from the sounboard, but also a little bit of the 'ambience' of the room.
From having listend to a number of live albums over the years this is a difficult balance to get right. If it sounds too 'live', it can become a bit echoey and it seems to lose a lot of the power/bass within the sound. I assume this is when they just stand a mic in the middle of the room?
Similarly, you can go too far the other way, just recording the soundboard with the result being a very 'dry' recording, losing the excitement of the fact it's a live show.
Any advice gratefully received.
