Without dEUS this label would not exist. These are of course truly seminal records that Rudy Trouve (Worst Case Scenario) and Craig Ward (In A Bar Under The Sea/The Ideal Crash) played on and they really did ultimately change our lives and expose us to Antwerp music or whatever you want to call it.

OK, very very briefly… dEUS emerged from Antwerp, Belgium with the unanimously critically acclaimed debut album Worst Case Scenario on Island Records in 1994 which successfully moulded a jazz sensibility with alternative guitar swing; ‘Suds and Soda’ became a minor crossover hit powered by intense touring and MTV’s 120 Minutes. The line-up of Tom Barman, (vocals/guitar), Rudy Trouvé (guitar/vocals), Stef Kamil Carlens, (bass/vocals), Klaas Janzoons (violin/keyboards) and Jules De Borgher (drums) managed to create a near perfect debut which fused art and music in a non pretentious way and also had a playful but highly emotive lyrical and aesthetic vulnerability. Trouvé was a painter who designed the band’s cover art and played guitar with wide brushstrokes.

After the Faust-esque experimental mini album ‘My Sister = My Clock’, Craig Ward replaced Rudy Trouve on guitar in 1995 upon Rudy’s recommendation and he formed a very strong songwriting partnership with Tom Barman for the epic ‘In A Bar Under The Sea’ album which spawned such nearly hits as ‘Little Arithmetic’ and ‘Theme From Turnpike’and was produced by Eric Drew Feldman of Captain Beefheart. Heavy worldwide touring followed with Placebo and Morphine.

In 1999 the band reconvened with David Bottrill to produce their multi layered masterwork The Ideal Crash, this time with Danny Mommens (Vive La Fete ) replacing Stef on bass as he went full time with his other band Zita Swoon. The single ‘Instant Street’ became another near smash hit, coupled with the now usual high press praise and further heavy touring… It would be another 6 years and much upheaval before dEUS would make another record but that is another story…
