How many people do you actually know who are all about music?
I was thinking about this the other day. By "all about music" I mean people who go to tons of gigs, are always on the look out for new music, etc.
At the moment I'm still a student, studying in York where there basically isn't a music scene at all, which is strange for me having grown up in London. I've lived here two years now. In that time, apart from my girlfriend, I haven't really met anyone who's all about going to gigs. I don't mind this too much in a sense because I hate going to gigs with people who don't want to be there but I do find it a bit strange and sometimes it's a bit depressing to think that I'm one of very few people, not just at York University, but potentially in the whole of York, who will regularly travel to gigs in Leeds as opposed to just sitting at home or going out on the piss.
It's not like it's an extortionately expensive lifestyle to lead (especially not compared to doing the same thing in London), and there's a real embarrassment of riches out there for the music fan in this area. Admittedly I'm helped by getting press for some gigs but even without that it's affordable if you budget your money accordingly.
Furthermore there seem to be tons of people who love music (playing it, listening to it, etc) but don't have the desire to either find out about new music (which, let's face it, is miles easier than it ever has been) or go to gigs. Are these people lesser music fans? I can't help but think it's weird to claim music is your passion if you only go to about five gigs a year.
Where are all the music fans? Am I just an outsider music fan for not living right in the midst of a music scene (i.e. in the middle of a major gig city)? How rare is it to actually come across people who are all about music?
Answers on a postcard.
