Genres of music you should be bored of by now
I've considered myself as a 'music fan' for over 10 years now and in my time of taking things very, very, deadly seriously, I've come to appreciate that there are certain genres that offer the initiate a good thrill, but quickly lose their appeal in most cases. If you're a true music fan you should avoid anything listed here and listen only to proper music for proper haircuts etc. These genres are not inherently bad, you should just be bored of them by now. I'm trying to come up with this list, can you help?
1# - Post rock
When you heard post rock for the first time you were blown away. The manipulation of musical texture seemed so deft and when the crescendo of the song finally arrived it felt transcendental. You were amazed by certain band members "multi instrumentalism". You probably used words like "majestic" and "sweeping" to describe it.
These days, as a music fan of some pedigree, you can see it for what it is: formulaic, and pure, cheap manipulation. In many ways post rock is like lomo photography - anyone can do it, anyone can take a blurry picture that hints at some ethereal, hazy atmosphere. Anyone can saturate colours. Now you are bored of listening to post rock, you realise it is music made by and for bedwetters with no real aesthetic convictions.
Notable exceptions - Mogwai
2# - Math rock
The first time you hear math rock you could barely believe it. Surely these were not musicians but polymaths? How could they weave together such intricate rhythms while retaining such a raw energy? It felt fulfilling for the mind and the body - it was an intellectual tour de force as well as a pure release akin to a primal scream. This was the natural evolution of rock music.
However nowadays, as a veteran music listener who understands what is valueable in music, this no longer excites you. You have seen behind the wizards curtain, and what you have seen is a group of boys creating a cold nothing, of no consequence. Their expression is the musical equivalent of so-called 'nice guy syndrome' - "why does nobody like my music? All those idiots are listening to these stupid bands. One days they will appreciate what was waiting patiently for them all these years, the stupid whores. Math rock guys always finish last".
Notable exceptions - Slint, J.S. Bach
