Bat Makumba #9 with DJ Sprinkles - Saturday 26th October, DLS basement, Sheffield
Ok, so this one's fairly exciting. We're heading into the DLS basement for the first time for a night soundtracked by the deep and emotive sounds of DJ Sprinkles.
Terre Thaemlitz is an award winning multi-media producer, writer, public speaker, educator, audio remixer, DJ and owner of the Comatonse Recordings record label. Her work combines a critical look at identity politics - including gender, sexuality, class, linguistics, ethnicity and race - with an ongoing analysis of the socio-economics of commercial media production. He has released over 15 solo albums, as well as numerous 12-inch singles and video works, taking in genres as diverse as electroacoustic computer music, deep house, digital jazz, ambient, and computer-composed neo-expressionist piano solos.
Thaemlitz will be performing for us under her deep house moniker, DJ Sprinkles, named after a cake mix advertisement as a reaction to macho DJ culture. After starting out DJing at activist benefits in New York, he became a resident DJ at the infamous transexual club Sally's II, for which she was presented with an Underground Grammy Award for "Best DJ 1991". Sprinkles became known for his unique intermixing of musical genres and moods, her parties dubbed "DJ Sprinkles' Deeperama" - an approach which predated the presence of "Chill Rooms" in New York.
Sprinkles held a three year residency at Club Module in Tokyo, and continues today through one-off engagements around the world. His debut full-length album, "Midtown 120 Blues," was selected as "Best Album of 2009" by Resident Advisor.
More recently, she has released 'Queerifications & Ruins', a gorgeous collection of remixes produced over the past three years, as well as the critically aclaimed 'Where Dancefloors Stand Still', a mix of dreamy deep house that references Japan's anti-dancing laws.
Support will be provided by Bat Makumba residents: Pudding, Sayid Silkhands and Braxton Hicks.
As usual, bring along your finest shapes and emotions. It's gonna be a special night.
