Revisiting Great Albums from 2013 #3 The Flaming Lips - The Terror
Of all the albums I will probably use in this list, this has the most detractors (or so it seems). But rather than just address the various criticisms and state why I disagree, I just want to highlight how devastating this album can be.
In terms of musical style, I was tempted to label it another "heavy psych" album similar to Embryonic, but realistically the darker tone hides the fact that this a softer approach, with large chunks of ambient electronica. If there is a main misstep, it is You Lust, not necessarily due to it's length, but if your going to repeat the same musical phrase over 11 minutes... make it a much more interesting.
I'm not going to say "If this wasn't the FL, it'd be better appreciated" but the band have periodically alienated various sections of their fanbase; fans of early albums are long gone, and those who loved Yoshimi wereunlikely to go giddy for the desolation of this. But realistically, anything vaguely psychedelic will always end up with a pessimistic style; the further you go into your own mind, the uglier it gets.
And finally, favourite track, which is easily Try To Explain http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wUKXA0cG1Yc Surely one of the most down to earth songs Coyne has written in many years, yet it's amazing how much he nails such a musical cliche (breaking up). All those years of the weird of wonderful has given him a strong understanding of another perspective, and it's all played out over little more than an electronic hum. "I believed you. I believe you. I believe."
