The Playground is pleased to announce a night of CHILLWAVE in association with LMNTL Magazine on saturday 5th April at SHAPES WAREHOUSE in Hackney featuring live shows from GIRAFFAGE, TEEN DAZE and LINDSAY LOWEND who are all joining us off their European tours along with an exclusive London show from KEEP SHELLY IN ATHENS, DAKTYL and more until the late hours of the morning.
Charlie Yin, or Giraffage, Hails from the sunny backdrop of San Fran and bases his creations around the MPC pad. His live sets consist of glitchy segments of bedroom dream-pop that ornately merge together, layering various samples, sundry instrumentation and clean percussion. His previous full length release "Need" was a huge success and brought him to the forefront of chillwave. His growing reputation has seen him tour America and Europe with the likes of XXYYXX and Yung Lean.
Fraser Valley is the Canadian who works under the moniker, Teen Daze. His sound sits somewhere between electronica and live acoustic with a gentle nod toward nu-disco. His style is often bright and colourful with a heavy synth influence. Since his break in the summer of 2010, Teen Daze has had a steady stream of releases which include 'My Bedroom Floor' and the debut LP 'All Of Us, Together'. With a successful catalogue of live shows, Valley is set to tour Europe this year with Giraffage, Yung Lean and Lindsay Lowend.
Keep Shelly In Athens are an innovative chillwave duo from Athens, Greece. The group made an impressive impact back in 2010 as they were quickly snapped up by Forest Family Records. Their style draws influences from 80s pop with a heavy synth basis that somehow soothes and spooks at the same instance. Distant vocals coupled with a four by four disco shuffle create a fittingly emotive experience. The synth-pop pair are creating a stir within the chillwave arena due to much internet hype. It is because of this that the group's Debut EP 'In Love With Dusk' sold out worldwide. With a powerful live show the pair have played at a number of large events and festivals all around the world including Amsterdam, Berlin, Dublin, New York, Paris, Toronto among many other countries.
Based in Washington D.C, Lindsay Lowend's style sits between chillwave and trap. His production is heavily focused on 8-bit sample chopping, drawing inspiration from computer gaming and 90s African American subcultures. Having not previously released any material, Lowend broke on to the scene with a mesmerising first effort. In 2013 the 20 year old dropped his 'Wind Fish' EP which encapsulated a warm and feel-good attitude. Tipped to be a big factor in the chillwave scene, Lowend is also set to tour Europe.
Born and bred brit, Daktyl, frequently switches between R&B-tinged trap and atmospheric chillwave. He has obtained a vast array of mainstream radio support from stations such as BBC Radio 1 and won extensive exposure on tastemaking underground radio station Rinse FM alongside pioneering DJs such as Plastician to name a few. This has led to a surge with his fanbase culminating over 300,000 plays in less than a year. Unlike many electronic producers, Daktyl is a classically trained pianist. After training his musical ear through those all important music lessons, Daktyl began to lose interest in sight-reading and began to create music with a friend playing acoustic guitar. 2013 was undoubtedly a huge year for Daktyl with releases on The Playground Records and White Colours gaining support in all the right areas with the No Love Lost EP and the contribution to the Black Oscillations Compilation. He has also supported acts like XXYYXX, Artful Dodger, Lunice and Baauer, and closed for The Bloody Beetroots in the main room at Koko on the 9th of March. With releases forthcoming on various labels 2014 is set to be a success for the young hopeful.
London based duo, T.W.i.N.S are perhaps one of the most interesting sounds to come out of 2013. Their unexpected blend of pop, dancehall, ska and rave seems to work well as they have received a lot of interest in their short career so far. 2013 was a great year for T.W.i.N.S. as their song “Found a Flat” premiered on the airwaves of Steve Lamacq’s BBC Radio 6 music and the duo were picked up by The Independent’s “Ones to watch”. They bagged remixes for Dim Mak, Kitsune and Moshi Moshi artists and somehow found time to support NYPC on their UK tour. The group are set to release their debut EP some time early 2014 and will begin their live shows.
The deep and smooth sounds of Subscope seems to be in a world of his own, where deep house meets chillwave. His thought provoking sound, with a heavy focus on soulful vocals and varied instrumentation is often too hard to pigeonhole into one genre. Although he hasn’t had any official label releases as of yet he has some impressive material available including his sought after ‘With You’ ft. McKoy and a Drum and Bass remake of Disclosure’s ‘You & Me’ Flume remix . 2014 is sure to be the year that he makes a sizeable impact.
THE PLAYGROUND is ready to kick off 2014 with the freshest international and local acts at Shapes Warehouse on Saturday 5th April. Shapes Warehouse can be found at 117 Wallis Road, Hackney Wick, E9 5LN.
