I think I'm alone now... acts that 'everyone' seems to love but you don't connect with/understand/like
It's weird, so many people with similar tastes to me love them but I've never connected with The Arcade Fire's music at all. Seen them live. Revisited the records on numerous occasions, but, no, nothing. I don't even feel like I dislike them.
There's a similar dead-core to them that I get from Radiohead, Neutral Milk Hotel and U2. I think it may also have something to do with the fact that the words are up there with some of Dave Grohl's worst lines. Which is odd, as the words are from the same school of swirled ideas as Mercury Rev, Beck and Sparklehorse, who I adore.
I get that it's grandiose rock music, and that it's meant to be a bit ridiculous without the Flaming Lips silliness or the Muse bombast, but rather than feeling like I'm in some glorious storm when I listen to them, it's more of the light drizzle that I hear when I listen to Coldplay. Which is fine, as I don't HAVE to listen to them, but often it feels like I'm the only one who shrugs at the thought of the band, although perhaps the indifference is hard to judge. Am I alone?
Anyway, Arcade Fire's Funeral is 10 and lots of people who have very similar taste to me have been sharing this and on social media and banging on about how much they love the album http://pitchfork.com/thepitch/484-arcade-fires-funeral-and-the-legacy-of-the-whoa-oh/
Are there any acts for you where it feels like people with very similar tastes to yours seem to adore, but you don't seem to 'get it'? Perhaps - a bit like the Sleaford Mods thread - fans could offer brief 'look at it this way' or 'just listen to this one' suggestions.
