Ólafur Arnalds on electronic music vs 'real' music
Thought this was a really interesting subject/answer...
“What’s an interesting point in this – if I can just speak from my own point of view as a composer outside of the Kiasmos project – I write all of my music on a computer, I barely actually perform any of it 'cause a lot of it is orchestral based, so I write it and somebody else plays. Does that mean I’m not a musician? Electronic artists do exactly the same, they have to write the music, they’re just doing it on a computer and then the computer will play it.
I do the same with classical instruments, but nobody asks me that question. Classical music has always been notated, which is the same as being sequenced like electronic music is, you know? People write it in sequencers or on drum machines or in these modern versions of notation. That’s what classical music has been for hundreds of years so in a way the approach to it is not very different at all.”
