Building an audience/fanbase, and just generally promoting your music.
So, like probably a fairly large portion of DiSers, I make my own music and self-release it on soundcloud. I've been doing this for about 3 years, and my general audience hasn't really grown that much since, which is kinda understandable as I don't really know how to promote myself other than posting tracks I've made on Facebook and occasionally jagging DiS. I have about 50 followers on soundcloud, and 30-something likes on my Facebook page, with each track I upload probably averaging about 100 plays (though it takes a while to get there normally).
The problem is, I seem to fit into an awkward middle ground both stylistically and in terms of how I do things. I don't have a band to play live with, mostly as I don't have any musician friends who live in the same area of the country as me, and I can't even come close to recreating the stuff I make by myself. I do often play open mic nights and small gigs acoustically by myself, but the stuff I tend to make is mostly synthpop sort of stuff, so its a very different sort of thing. On the other side of the spectrum, I'm not an EDM producer, so the mostly online methods of promotion that they use probably wouldn't fit with my style.
So I was basically wondering if anyone had any advice about this sort of thing really, cos while I make music primarily for my own enjoyment, it would be nice if some other people were to hear it.
(Also, ever the opportunist, here are what I'd probably call my two best tracks if anybody wanted to listen: https://soundcloud.com/complications/traffic-final-mix https://soundcloud.com/complications/perfect-headache-unfinished - and here's a general link to my soundcloud page: https://soundcloud.com/complications )
