Also with industry luminaries you might have a slightly tenuous link with eg. 'I was only saying to Alan the other day that Heavy Stereo were the missing link between Cro-magnon man and The Gossip'.

Unless you actually know these people really really well why talk about them like you do only using their first name? It doesn't somehow make you become some sort of bezzie mate with them or somehow instill you with more knowledge or put you on a higher plain now does it?
