Anyone else find it really annoying?

Are they actually asking a question and expecting a reply like "not much" or "quite a bit actually"? Or is it just a way of saying "hi" and nothing more?

I'm always unsure about how to respond and usually either mumble something and trail off or pretend they didn't say it and just ask them something new to get the conversation going.
