during the setting the world to rights sessions/rants that people have in the library i work at this is the aspect of the case that most people seem concerned with.
'what the hell sort of parent goes leaving their kids like that?!'
usually followed quickly by someone saying 'if they were poor/unemployed/a single parent/not whitebritish the papers would tear strips off them. it must be a class thing, us working class types wouldn't abandon our kids'
and so on.
