Infuriating cohabitation machinations

chiaroscuro [Edit] [Delete] 02:25, 12 September '07

I'm moving house this weekend and I just had a row with one of my new flatmates, which isn't a good start.

He's living with his girlfriend in one room and everyone else is living in a room by themselves. I raised the question of how we were going to split the rent. The landlord added £60 pcm to the total rent to account for the extra person living in the house, which seems to me a remarkably small amount.

In short, he expects him and his girlfriend to pay nothing more than the price the rest of us are paying plus the £60, with the effect that he and his girlfriend are paying little more than half the amount everyone else is paying each. I suggested that seeing as they have the use of the whole of the rest of the house, they might consider taking a little bit more off our rents to make it more equitable. This is the way it's been done in other places I've lived in where there have been couples.

He simply refused completely. His rationale being that he's paying for half a room, so shouldn't have to pay any more than that, or as he put it, 'subsidise' our rents.

Added to this is the fact that he earns considerably more than the rest of us anyway.

Everybody else is declining to fight their corner with the result that I'm totally railroaded. I'm really fucking annoyed. It's not the money per se, its more the fact that he suggested he was being fair, rather than self-interested. Am I being unreasonable?
