guntrip reviews: g-lock air battle (sega megadrive, 1992)

guntrip [Edit] [Delete] 22:21, 30 October '07

the premise of this game is that you are a fighter pilot, tasked with a variety of missions, including shooting down enemy planes, destroying enemy silos, and sinking enemy ships. at your command you have a chain gun with a seemingly-unlimited amount of ammo, and missles. it is unclear which nation you represent, and which nation(s) you are fighting against.

this game perplexes me - more specifically, the conduct of the military force you are a member of perplexes me. missions consist of a set number of targets you must destroy within a time limit. it seems that it does not matter how times you get shot down and, thus, how many planes you cause to be destroyed - what is important is the time limit. you do not fail at a mission by causing several hundred million pounds worth of hardware to be lost, you fail by not shooting down 15 planes in 99 seconds. furthermore, your superior officers are quite happy to judge your mission complete even if there are still enemy planes in your HUD. these may occasionally still be shooting at you as your superiors congratulate you.

however, it must be said that the sheer fun of getting to waste what would amount to the entire airforce of Europe in about five minutes on one's own does somewhat make up for these logical fallicies.

overall, i rate this game a B+, but mostly because it cost me £1.50 in a Cancer Research UK charity shop.
