News that in no way constitues news

theguywithnousername [Edit] [Delete] 10:29, 11 December '07

Not having a digital radio and having a dislike of Chris Moyles, my clock-radio is set to XFM every morning. This morning I woke to find the top stories on there news were.

* Fans enjoy Led Zeppelin's comeback show

* Missing canoeist's wife up in court later today

* Capello now favourite for England job.

It struck me that none of this is actually news. The first one is essentially a PR piece about how great the Led Zeppelin gig was. (And of course fans enjoyed it - they're fans. Plus if they didn't no-one who'd spent that much would even admit to themselves they had a crap time)

The second isn't really news as it's reporting something that hasn't happened yet (and since she's been charged, it's also a logical assumption she'd go to court so it doesn't really constitute new information)

The third one is purely newspaper speculation.

This led me to think: how much of the news we here actually can genuinely be seen as a "news" story?
