if you were running a large program such as ableton which was stored on a USB external hard drive (on a powerbook g4) would there be any reason why this could affect performance or generally not be a good idea? or should it work fine?

It's just the new 'ableton suite' says it takes up 44GB of hard disk space (unless there's a '.' missing somewhere) and I don't have 44GB of hd space.
