racist friends

Gaemblor [Edit] [Delete] 00:06, 24 April '08

Ok here's a bit of a back story. A couple of my friends at home in Grimsby are into the mod and skinhead scene. I've no problem with that. They seem to enjoy driving their scooters around (as slow and unreliable as they are!) and listening to bald men shouting 'OI' a lot. Sadly though it seems whenever I go out with my mates in Grimsby they display racist sentiments. It's not just the skinhead ones either. I'd say out of the group of 15 or so people I hang out with at home at least 6 of them act the same. Usually it will be them moaning about any person from a different country and using whatever slurs they can think of. This only really happens when their drunk though so I put up with it.
Now as you may know today is St George's day. I'm completely indifferent to this. I think being English is pretty cool but I don't feel the need to wave our flag about or rejoice exorbitantly. All my more 'right wing' friends though seem to be updating their facebook and MSN status to celebrate. I was talking to one of them earlier over MSN and he asked me why nobody seemed to be that bothered about St George's day. I replied that 'it just seems to be a thinly veiled excuse to be racist'. He replied 'lol probably'.
This evening one of my friends sent a myspace bulletin that contained the following message:

"...do yourself a favour - http://www.bnp.org.uk/
the only party that seems to care about the decent people in this country"

Massive :( . I never thought it would get this bad. I even looked at the BNP's website but it just seems to be full of flawed arguments along the lines of "people say we're racist but if WE'RE racist then all these groups are too" followed by a load of links to British based minority groups that don't appear to be racist in any way. I mean one of them was called something like "Doncaster Chinese learning and resource centre". How the BNP finds something like that racist and uses it to defend itself I have no fucking idea.

It's really sad because they're all nice guys and i've been friends with them for years but it seems like living somewhere as culturally isolated as Grimsby has messed them up. I don't think any of them would hurt or insult someone foreign personally but it's sickening to think i'm friends with people who will discriminate against someone just because of where they're from. When i've asked them about their beliefs I just get a load of "this is our country they should fuck off home" or "bloody immigrants leeching off our taxes". Pointing out the problems with these arguments does nothing.

I dunno why i'm posting this. I just felt the need to get it off my chest. It would be impossible to stop hanging round with them when i'm at home because all my other cool non-racist mates don't seem to fussed. I don't know what I should do :( :( :(

sorry about this being pretty long too!
