can someone explain the purpose of hibernation to me please?

I’ve never really understood why life would evolve into an existence where it sleeps for more than a quarter of the year. Sure, it bypasses the cold times, and sleep is great, but it’s not 3+ months great, and do hibernators get restless? And do they need to do bodily things in their sleep? and do they have wet dreams in their sleep? And do they dream, or are they out cold, isn’t there something to do with dropping of body temperatures? So does that mean they are in a coma or something? I don’t know why I care really, but I am very tired.
