I mean the old pre-60s days when one of a couple'd go out and work whilst the other would look after the home and children etc.

Taking aside, if you can, the obvious imbalance that it had to be the woman at home and the man working, do you think there's anything to be said for such clearly defined roles within relationships?

Personally I'm not too sure. If I'm honest I do genuinely believe that, once children are involved, kids benefit from a parent staying at home and spending time with them but obviously at the same time it does no-one any good to have to abandon their career (and, if they find identity within their jobs then their identities too) against their wishes.

But I do wonder if the current system of everyone going out and working all the time actually does anything to improve anyone's quality of life.

Maybe the ideal happy medium would be if both man and woman could work part-time?
