My favourite bit:

'"About as much chance of that as getting a vote on the European Constitution," said William, popping the seal on another can of wife-beater.'

It's just the consistency with which he writes his characters; it really gets you there, right into the story. A modern fable and a cautionary tale for Great Britain, if not the entire western world.
