Does anyone know if there's a way to remove the background from an simple-ish imported jpg somehow?

Like being able to use the dropper tool to select the background colour and removing that colour from the image?

If not, does anyone have any techniques for getting rid of the background of a logo, leaving just the text so I can impose it on top of another image?
