Does anyone have any words of wisdom on the subject of completing job application forms?

I'm specifically looking for help with the "personal statement" bit and matching it with the job spec. Do you take it point by point on the spec or choronologically through your working career? Does putting headers and splitting it up into sections work?

Any advice would be gratefully recieved, ta :)
