Why is it okay for certain celebrities to be racist/homophobic/sexist etc?

Odyssey [Edit] [Delete] 13:42, 29 August '08

Following on from yesterday's Josh Homme thread, I was pretty surprised to see that, when I called Josh a homophobe, people defended him, or didn't even acknowledge me. This got me thinking.

Why is it okay for people in the limelight to have these hateful hang-ups when your average Joe would be shot down within seconds? It's pretty bizarre that people can look past and even admire the bigoted views of a musician or an actor or whoever just because of what they've done to become famous.
