Today's business news (football thread)

simon_t [Edit] [Delete] 09:28, 3 September '08

Morning. My football threads seem to have been popular and spurred football itself onto new heights so far this week, so let's give it another go.

Kevin Keegan, eh? Everyone insists he's still in his job despite everyone else thinking they know he's out. I just have a sneaking suspicion that, despite the lengths the story has reached, he might go back having now seen what's happened in light of his supposed walkout and everyone will pretend that nothing happened. Wouldn't be the first time. (Jonathan Legard quote for 5 Live: "Newcastle say he hasn't been sacked. The LMA say he hasn't resigned. No-one is actually saying Keegan is staying as manager." Well, there aren't a lot of other options.) If he does go, Wise and Poyet will unsurprisingly step up.

Taking advantage of bad transfer window insulation, Plymouth have signed Emile Mpenza and West Ham David di Michele, Herita Ilunga and possibly Stephen Appiah.

Peter Reid is the new manager of Thailand. Something about ladyboys.

Doncaster Belles could close before the end of the week after their sponsor pulled out. Despite changing times the Belles essentially are to most, I think, English women's football and that they might be allowed to slip away in the night is something of an indictment.

The papers are going big on the usual But What Does It All Mean? on Man City. The Times reckons Liverpool could be bought by Sheikh Mohammed, a continuation of the Dubai/Abu Dhabi battle for economic supremacy. This will be 'fun'.

Alan Curbishley supposedly had a row with Lucas Neill after the Blackburn game. Which West Ham won 4-1, you'll recall.
