What's the big deal with Mega Man?

I own Mega Man 2 for the NES, and it's a simple platformer. Why is there a million Mega Man games? How much more jumping can Mega Man do?

I don't know any Mega Man fans, or anyone who has any strong feelings for the Blue Bomber. No one I know does. WHO IS BUYING THESE GAMES?!
