How is it possible to become bad at something which literally only involves pouring water on an object?

For the past fortnight every cup I've made has tasted terrible, but I'd assumed maybe I'd just lost interest in tea. But just now someone made me one and it's fantastic - tea love remains - meaning I'm doing something wrong somewhere when I make it myself.

Is there a more desperate breed than a man who can't operate a tea bag?
