Work Colleagues + Facebook = Fail
As in: adding work colleagues that aren't proper friends. We all know that.
But what do you do when the following dialogue occurs?
-Senior Work Colleague: "Are you on facebook then?"
-Me: "Yeah, I've got an account."
-Senior Work Colleague: "Oh...ok...cos I don't know why people would wan't to put all their private stuff up for people to see, who aren't even their friends."
-My Boss: "Go on then and show us, let's have a look at what it's all about."
-Me: Casual spewing of comments about how I'm barely have anything on mine, that you can lock it down so people can barely see anything, that I've done that, that some folk treat it as a shared photo album, and some tend to put all kinds of banal stuff on their pages, that facebook can be kinda useful, but twitter really is pushing the limits... ... ...
-Senior Work Colleague: "Yeah, I heard about twitter" [plus assorted dull tweets that she'd heard about as an illustration of her bewilderment].
Me: "That sounds about right."
Luckily, the discussion fizzled away and I didn't end up being cajoled into showing my facebook account to 'em and either a) having to say a flat no or b) doing it. Obviously b) would've been worse but a) would've aroused suspicion. I think my apparent ambivalence towards the "popular social networking website" couled with my employers' sense of tact ended up diffusing the situation.
But it was a close one.
