Surely selling off Royal Mail right now is sheer stupidity?

Apparently, the Government is thinking about selling off Royal Mail.

Now I find this baffling. Throughout this entire financial crisis a lot of the blame has been put at the doors of online companies for robbing the high street of passing trade.

If that's the case, and online shopping is a growth industry, then SURELY the delivery of these items is in the ascendancy too, and the sensible thing would be to make Royal Mail competitive with UPS, FedEx etc and take a large share of this booms monetary return?

Am I missing something, or are we potentially flushing away one of the country's best avenues for actually making some capital gain?
