Moderators Disappearing Posts

Stealthy [Edit] [Delete] 00:10, 23 March '09

This is happening more and more recently.

Let us consider the breathtaking arrogance of presuming that an individual, using only the authority of a software function, can decide what is and isn't offensive enough to censor.

But let us also consider how and where this function is being used. On trolls, whose only purpose is to fuck up the discussion experience for everyone else, I can see the point of. Deleting the posts of legitimate users who are only participating in a debate - just because they happen to be on the wrong side of what is deemed to be the consensus - the obvious comparison: http://tinyurl.com/cgrln3

Finally, let us consider a user reading a thread in which there has been some kind of heated dispute. The dispute appears to take an odd turn - escalating and then mysteriously halting without any resolution. The user has no idea that any post in this thread has been deleted - and why should they? There is no sign stating that anything has been removed and indeed, many people only realise it has occurred when the participants complain that no-one can see their stupid argument over trivial bullshit and the mod himself arrives to say "I deleted your post. Soz". This rarely brings an end to hostility and is more likely to make the thread look stupid and create an air of resentment and tension.

I hereby propose a motion that may astound and anger some, but which I believe to be wholly correct: I move that we are all more or less adults, and that outside of blatant trolling, there is no word or sequence of words so horrible and outrageous that it need be preemptively removed from our sight lest it corrupt our very souls. By all means, ban users who misbehave, but it's clear the policy of summarily deleting 'offensive' posts therefore, should be immediately halted.

I fang yew.
