What is the best way to receive compliments without looking massively stand-offish, rude, insecure or smug?

And how often do you compliment other people? I constantly want to but always feel it comes off a bit disingenuous or forced.

(Obviously, I ask this purely because I am just SO sick of being bombarded with incessant compliments ("oh god aren't you so fucking great myih myih myih" etc.) and need a way to deal with these unwanted sycophants. Y'know.)
