Guess What? Passwords Don't Mean Shit to Google Desktop

Stealthy [Edit] [Delete] 19:52, 7 April '09

Public Service Announcement:

Before I left for the day's business, I wanted to check something quickly on my PC. Pressing Ctrl twice brings up the Google Desktop search dialog.

Now I'd already been having an issue with Google Desktop Search - in that when searching for a specific file or program, it seemed to decide what results to display by referring to a random higher power when it should have been following my commands. Some programs would appear after a few keystrokes, some would never appear no matter how hard I searched the PC.

This morning the search brought up another intriguing result: A word file. Not the one I was after, so I almost missed what was weird about the happenstance. It was more that it was a password-protected docx file - supposedly great encryption - and Google Desktop had seen fit to show the file and a preview of all the information contained therein. I was all like, "...wut?". I did another search, specifically for the file containing some actually confidential information. Google gave it to me very quickly indeed.

Moreover, I did a search for this issue (via Google, natch) and found a blog post on the problem dated from 2004. Which means that Google have had 5 years to pull their finger out on this and just haven't.

Now, I can't really be arsed to workaround this new bullshit and have therefore simply removed this program (which was fucking useless anyway) from my computer entirely. And if I want a quick peek at some secret shit on anyone else's PC, I know what to do...
