Is it reasonable to raise your kids as vegetarians/vegans?

theguywithnousername [Edit] [Delete] 11:27, 4 May '09

I was just reading something from a friend of mine on another messageboard whose raised his 3 kids as vegans and I was just thinking "is it entirely fair to take that decision on their behalf before they're old enough to make their own decision?"

I mean it's obviously entirely reasonable if you're a vegetarian/vegan not to give your kids meat. If you don't cook it and don't want to cook it that's absolutely fine and I'm certainly not suggesting you should cook meat for your kids. But is it fair to insist that your children don't eat meat when they're at friends' houses for example? Or perhaps even in school meals/restaurants on school trips? Aren't you then crossing a line to imposing your beliefs on your children in a way that's unfair at such a young age?

I guess in a way it's a bit similar to the Christening debate i.e. is it fair to initiate your children in a religion before they're old enough to make their own decision on that?
