Phobia treatment

nymeria [Edit] [Delete] 23:24, 8 July '09

Does anyone have experience of this? Or know somebody who has? And knows anything about likelihood of getting treatments / doctors attitudes / kind of treatments etc?

They have some stuff on specific phobias on the NHS website, so it seems like they do offer treatment, but it obviously won't be a priority and would likely be many months before available. But I'm guessing some doctors would just dismiss it totally. I know it's nothing compared to social phobias, but it really does make my life hell for two thirds of the year. I don't want to go in there and sound really desperate though - that always seems bad when talking to doctors.

I have a really severe insect phobia (I've jumped out of a moving car to escape a ladybird, jumped off a pretty high portacabin roof because of a moth, need to have every inch of my body neck-and-below covered when outside, spend half the Summer sleeping in a car etc). Basically, it's damaging my life so much - I can't go into a garden, I have to fully covered with a mosquito net hat in the countryside, I can't be near people eating/drinking outside, nearly got fired from a job, have missed a job, have flooded the house, have to check every last bit of an item of clothing/duvet cover inside and out before wearing it/sleeping under it. You get the idea, yeah? I realise that wasn't required - but you just know some lovely person is going to respond with 'they don't hurt you, get over it and stop being dramatic'.

This is kind of a long shot thread, so if nobody replies feel free to laugh at my being pathetic instead.
