I was discussing this the other day with some friends and maybe posting this will make me look really dismissive but I'm genuinely interested. It was brought up by all this talk of Antichrist being horribly misogynist. Can't say I could see where that was coming from unless you take it that Von Trier was saying that the female character was representative of all women in some way. I quite possibly missed that bit but I thought it was very much a story about those two characters. The man was just as bad surely.

What does it actually mean in practice, as applied to books / films?
A lot of things seem to get classed as misogynistic and I can't always see why. Is it over-used? If something has 2-dimensional and unpleasant female characters, can that be termed as misogynistic? Why are equivalently pointed representations of men not similarly damned? I presume because there are more instances of the former (perhaps due to the bias to male authors, writers and directors).

Could someone name some examples of where they think it is justifiably invoked?
