'A Month In The Country' by J. L. Carr. It's the first book I've read in years that's made me think 'gosh that was a bloody good book' all the way through and even more so by the end and has left me thinking 'hum' and then repeatedly thinking back to it in subsequent weeks and thinking either 'hum' or 'aah!'.
It's very good, I think you'd like it.
