hello, i've been ripping cds to itunes but when it comes to getting them on to my ipod nothing happens!

i can see the album on itunes fine once it's ripped but it won't add it to my library and when i sync my ipod nothing happens. am i being really thick? any help would be much appreciated as this is mega annoying.
