Why do toasters have such high settings?

mymiddlenameaintthor [Edit] [Delete] 08:56, 2 November '09

The settings on my toaster go up to 10. I currently have it on 3 where it produces a nice even browning in the time it is down. What sort of carbonised-bread-loving-hermaferadite uses the 10 setting? Surely the stench of burning bread would be too much for even these sponges to take?.

Also, burning toast is one of the foulest smells ever yet bread baking is one of the best. Weird, huh?
