I don't want to leave said groups or events but I never read any of the messages they send me: I sync my Google Calendar with the Facebook Event feed so I can see what's going on there and manage things properly.

And with Groups/Pages there are only a few that actually send me updates I care about (hello ATP). For the rest it's just a case of deleting loads of messages from my inbox so I can get to the ones that actually matter.
