That's right. I have formulated an opinion on a piece of entertainment that is entirely my own, rather one that I imply is my own but I picked up from something obscure so I won't get picked up.

Avatar is shit.

But at the same time it is mindnumbingly good entertainment that shows without a doubt that 3D live action films definatley have shelf room.

(Now my opinion) Avatar may be shit, but it does address something that filmmakers have been disregarding since, effectively the introduction of home video, but more recently the effect of the DVD. In recent years all films that have been released at the cinema have been avaliable to watch at home without little difference, you can still immerse yourself in the film. I think it's why the 'indie' film genre has grown and grown in recent times. 3D style home video has been really disregarded, mainly because it looks shit, but also cos you need a good tv and a good seating angle etc.

In my opinion Avatar promosises a return to the institute of the cinema. It is one of a few recent films (Crouching Tiger, LOTR) that can only truely be experienced inside the cinema, where film is originally intended to be screened. All the films prior the 70s were never meant to see that light of day after their cinema release, and even though hundreds of thousands of these films have been restored and put on DVDs, their true environment should be the cinema screen. Avatar has the oppotunity to give birth to a new set of films that should only be seen at the cinema, where only the great films can be enjoyed in all their glory.
