Friday football thread

I'm a bit scared of doing this as I've never done it before. Will everyone just ignore it and start their own? Well, anyway, here we go:

Macclesfield v Hereford will go ahead despite Keith Alexander's death. It's a bit tough to say what the right thing to do is in these situations but from the sounds of it it's what the family wanted so it's probably the right decision.

There will be no Premier League play-off. Although it seems to have been the teams just behind the Big Four pushing for this, I reckon they've dodged a bullet. Rather than increasing their odds I think it would just have given Arsenal or Liverpool an escape route so, even if they missed fourth, they'd still qualify for Europe.

"Newspaper stories to unsettle England" continues with rumours Fabio Capello's going to be poached by Russia after the World Cup. It's a bit premature to see it as anything more than paper talk at the moment...

Ian Wright manages to take primary school parental touchline "support" to a professional level. Apparently at local level the school governors don't respect his boy's ability enough and at national level it's a mystery why the headteacher keeps picking that other boy instead who's clearly not as good as his son. I imagine SWP is sulking over his Frosties at the family breakfast table this morning.

But England are boosted by the news Chales N'Zogbia WILL play for England if asked. I'm tempted to release a press release announcing to Capello that I'm available for selection too.

Speculation continues about Joe Cole's future. One of my favourite players but (supposing the rumours are true) demanding a big pay rise after two years of form and fitness problems is probably not his best strategy.

Numerous transfer rumours happen.

The FA Cup quarter-finals this weekend. Fulham, Portsmouth, Chelsea and Villa for me whilst Warnock's QPR v West Brom and The Trees v the Swans are probably the pick of the Championship matches. Bristol City are at home to Doncaster incidenally.

In Scotland, this season seems to be over via the shouting in the SPL but there's talk of another reconfiguration and a sixteen team SPL. Personally I quite like the "play each other 4 times a season" format - it sort of evens things out as you're not likely to nab a flukey win away to a bigger side twice. That itself probably helps the Celtic-Rsngers dominance though.

Some other stuff might have happened. Fire away below...
