What's the point of spoiling a ballot?

hip_young_gunslinger [Edit] [Delete] 12:43, 6 April '10

I don't really see any use in it.

You don't have any say in who actually gets into power (so you can't say "I voted for them and they've let me down" / "Don't blame me I, I voted for the other guys"), and you're essay won't influence anybody because I know how the counting works and anything without a clear vote just gets put to one side.

The only practical implication is that any party will claim a smaller percentage of any votes cast. But I don't see why that's any different from there just being a smaller number of votes cast in terms of illustrating voter apathy.

In an ideal world, obviously everyone would take an interest in politics and the way it affects their lives and feel compelled to exercise their democratic rights to elect their leader. But if you don't care, or you don't want to vote for any party, then I don't see why you wouldn't just stay at home.
