TV 2010

Stealthy [Edit] [Delete] 12:58, 5 May '10

So far...

Good:

Breaking Bad (just finished season 2) - I thought this was going to be a quirky comedy when I started watching it. Gradually and almost without my notice, it's turned into the blackest shit, thanks largely to one of the strongest central performances on TV today. Can't wait to get started on season 3 after the shit I just saw.

Damages (just finished season 3) - Similarly imbued with ACTING from all the main cast, the last season of this show was more soap than Breaking Bad, but you can't help but get drawn in by a dense plotting (that could be fairly described as a 'Web of Intrigue') or by the magisterial Glenn Close. Close's Patty Hewes is another one of THOSE characters - like Tony Soprano or Al Swearengen, they are at the centre of every scene they're in, and close to most of those they're not. Patty is different. First off, unlike most of TV's other Magnificent Bastards, she's a woman. But more importantly, she actually seems untouchable - half the other characters are shit scared of her. The others cower in awe. She doesn't give a fuck. Patty Hewes exists purely to get restitution for the evil of others. And of the evil that she spreads in her own life? Well...

Community (midway through first season) - is broad, but crucially also funny. Chevy Chase would like to channel Jeffrey Tambor's genius from Arrested Development. I support him in this.

Treme - Written by The Wire people. So... also: The music.

Not So Good:

The Pacific - because I've seen it all before and I could give a fuck about Americans fighting Japs and the title sequence is too long and +10 pomposity. I'm still watching it, though.

Dr Who - Feels cheap and is clearly a children's show, yet is treated as if it warrants adult consideration. Not yet.
