I keep hearing that this statement has played badly in America because of the cultural differences between there and the UK.

Does anyone else not buy this? I've heard many times this idea that we are two nations divided by a common language but I genuinely don't believe this an example of that.

Surely it was a ridiculously crass statement in any language.
