Collections at work

DanielKelly [Edit] [Delete] 12:24, 10 June '10

So someone on my team is off tomorrow and we're having a collection for them. No problems. I mean, I don't really know them 'cos they're well quiet and despite being in the same team of six our jobs don't really overlap.

What baffles me is that we're apparently not using the collection to fund present-buying. We're just gonna give them the money. Does that seem a bit off to anyone else? It's not meant as a tight thing 'cos I'm putting as much in as I would if I were contributing towards an actual present, it just seems weird to just give someone I vaguely know money. Especially when they're leaving one job that pays more than mine for one that pays more than their old job ...

Etiquette here, people? Am I alone in thinking this is a bit weird?
