Audio equipment nerd needed...

I've not noticed it before, but my speakers have become very boomy and unbalanced. The bass is inordinately loud and boomy, reverberating a heck of a lot (like the surface around the speakers is reverberating with it) and making things almost unlistenable. And with my new laptop (a mac, where my old one was a pc) my stereo system often signals that the input level is too high or something (I have them hooked up with a mini jack to mini jack cable.) My stereo system is an approx. 8 year old jvc 3 cd, minidisc, and fm/am radio...might need replacing (one of the disc trays doesn't function properly, opening and closing erratically, and at times not responding at all.)

Anyway, any remedy for the boomy bass? How much is a decent pair of speakers which can be directly hooked up to a computer/ipod? How much is a decent stereo system with the mod cons?
